As everyone reading this article knows, the Building Official/Inspector is a vital part of public safety. We are charged with keeping the “peace” when it comes to city ordinances, building code and construction. That type of peacekeeping involves about every aspect of municipal work you can imagine. In short, we wear a lot of hats. However, what goes unspoken, is behind every dedicated, hardworking, and committed Building Official/Inspector, is the family that supports him or her.
A Building Official/Inspector deals with a wide range of complex challenges every day. Having family support provides the confidence and ability to put in the time and effort it takes to be that very effective Building Official/Inspector. When faced with stress or frustration, knowing that loved ones are there to listen, empathize, and encourage can make a significant difference in how the job is done.
A Building Official/Inspector works long and sometime irregular hours, including nights and weekends. With that in mind, you can imagine how hard it can be to maintain a good work-life balance. Having a supportive family makes all the difference in allowing the Building Official/Inspector to focus on their responsibilities as a public servant.
It is so important that the Building Official/Inspector’s family understands the role and mission. It is also just as important that it be known the sacrifices made by the family when the Building Official/Inspector is not able to be present.
It has been said, and I agree, that the Building Official/Inspector is sometimes an unsung hero when comes to protecting life safety in construction. However, the sacrifices each of the family members makes every day in support should also be recognized.
Please remember, when you see a Building Inspector or Official at work, you’re witnessing the collective effort of both the individual and their supportive family.
